Slap Fear in the Face…and Achieve More in Your Business

In today’s video I talk about how to overcome the fear that’s preventing us from creating the amazing businesses that we deserve.

Slap Fear in the Face!

Hey there,  this is Tom Buford of Tom Buford and in this video I’m going to help you achieve more by slapping fear in the face.

I got a great question from somebody the other day about how to overcome fear, because this fear is actually preventing her from moving forward with her business.

We all have fear around new things; and old.  Sometimes this fear can be paralyzing.   Fear might be preventing you from Charging What You Deserve, Attracting higher quality clients, getting on stage as a speaker, sharing short videos like this one or just claiming your role as an expert in your industry.  And all of that might be preventing you from building the amazing business that you deserve.

So how do we get past this fear?

I’m going to go back in time about 14 year.  This is when I got my certification as a skydiver.  I had to overcome a LOT of fear when I started jumping from planes.  But MOST of that fear was around all of the build-up.  In other words, it was the conversation I had in my head during my drive to the drop zone and during the plane ride up.

But once I made the leap (literally) the fear was gone.  There wasn’t any time and it didn’t make sense to be afraid.  I needed to stay focused and concentrate on getting my feet safely to the ground.

Remove Fear with Action.

Listen, our brains are wired for creativity and making up stories.  What we do is create all of these stories in our heads around what MIGHT happen.

“If I do this, that will happen.  If I do that, this will happen.”

But 99% of the time NONE of that stuff never comes true.  The reality is that even in the worst case scenario we’re going to be far better off just moving forward and taking action.  What’s the worst thing that can happen if you decide to raise your fees and you hear a “NO?”  You learn and you move on.  If we let fear dictate us, we’ll be stuck in same place 12 months later and nothing will have changed.

So, I’m going to challenge you to pick ONE thing that you’ve been holding off on because of fear.  And I want you to take action toward achieving it.  To make this even more powerful, make a public claim for some accountability.  It can be the comments section below, it can be with a friend or colleague or even on Facebook or LinkedIn.   The world will be a much better place with your message out there, so don’t let fear hold you back.

If you’d like help breaking through any fear, or anything else, that’s holding you back from the success that you deserve in your business then we should probably talk.  Whether it’s around charging what you deserve, attracting higher quality clients, claiming your role as an expert or just getting your business to a solid six figures then I’d love to talk.

You can get started by going to, fill out the simple application and we’ll see if it makes sense to get on the phone and talk.

Until next time, this is Tom Buford of Tom Buford Marketing.  I’ll see you in the next video.

I can totally relate to the fear building up in skydiving. My fear really starts when the plane lifts off the ground. Now I have used anchors to change fear into excitement (as if it’s not exciting enough!).

I’ll accept your challenge and publicly share the next fear I will attack…

Fear of starting a podcast.

There you have it! Thanks for the post and very professional video!

    Hey Matthew,

Thanks for the post and congrats on the challenge. I can’t wait to hear your podcast show! Let me know if there’s anything I can do to support you moving forward with this.

Yeah, I was always more comfortable leaving the plane in mid-flight than taking the ride up!

Cheers and thanks again for the feedback.

Hi Tom… Great post… there was a recent article that spoke to fear and in particular, why most people don’t start their business. I did a video on Youtube about overcoming fear, and in fact, it has received over 50,000 views. I submit, that fear doesn’t actually exist. 🙂 Here is a link to check it out… Fear is something that we have been trained to think exist… just another “perspective”… thanks for the post.

Great advice Tom. My hubby is a pro skydiver and stuntman, so I appreciate your story ( I do NOT jump out of planes!) Great video.

Thanks for sharing this video Tom. Taking acton on my fear today! Question: What do you use for your video backdrop so you background is white? Where/what did you do? Looking forward to more videos 🙂

    Hey Myleen,

Thanks for checking it out. The white is from a white backdrop and you can buy them on Amazon. The trick is getting the lighting set correctly. Check out Steven has some great tutorials on getting video right.
